Digital Life at Mid-High
Digital media connects us in more social and interactive ways than ever before. At Westmount, we provide many technology resources to enhance the learning experience. It is important for students to understand and exercise personal responsibility in their use of all of these resources.
Westmount Charter School Mid-High Student
Technology Expectations and Responsible Use Agreement 2016-2017
Technology for students coming into grade 5
Students coming into grade 5 are not expected to bring their own technology to school (although they are welcome to if this supports their own learning needs). Instead, students will have the opportunity throughout grade 5 to learn digital citizenship, safety, and the role of technology as a tool to support their learning. They will be introduced to a variety of devices through the Learning Commons and be able to try them out in different ways. The grade 5 teaching team will be working with Learning Commons staff throughout the year to integrate technology into their learning, and students will be able to sign devices out for classroom use.
The goal is for students to have an understanding of how technology fits into their world as a learner, and their responsibility to use technology in a safe and ethical manner. They will then be empowered to make an educated decision regarding what kind of device they will need for grade 6 and beyond.
Technology for students coming into grades 6-12
Students are expected to have access to computer technology throughout the school year to enhance and optimize learning. This means that all students in grades 6-12 are responsible for bringing their own technology to school. This reinforces the development of the ethics that are required in a digital world and demands a close partnership between families and the school to ensure that the technology is being used effectively and appropriately in all venues at all times.
Students are permitted to bring whatever device best meets their learning needs. Although we won’t recommend specific models or kinds of devices, if you buy a computer or tablet for your child we encourage you to buy a device that features:
Students should bring their devices fully charged to school as power outlets are limited and stretching cords in the classroom to plug them in creates a hazardous environment.
All students will be required to review the updated Responsible Use of Technology agreement in their classes in the fall, and it will be posted on the school website at this time.
